How to Attract Your Ideal Photography Clients

Let me go out on a limb here and guess that your ideal photography client would be someone who appreciates artful storytelling. They want the in-between moments. They appreciate creative, editorial style photography. Does this sound like the type of person you hope is the next to fill out your contact form? Here’s how we get our name in front of these wonderful people. They do exist!

  1. Post only what you want to photograph. You’ll very rarely see me sharing the traditional, smiling-at-the-camera photos. That’s not to say I don’t take them, believe me I do. I’m a mom who personally loves those shots to frame or put on a Christmas card so I know the importance of getting a few of those. If you only want to photograph those candid, in-between moments, then make sure that’s what you’re primarily sharing on social media and on your website.

  2. Articulate how your ideal client wants to feel after working with you. Do this in your IG captions, on your website copy, your pricing guide, etc. Is your client going to get watery eyes while viewing their final gallery because you’ve perfectly captured the way her toddler innocently buries his face in her neck when he’s nervous. Paint that type of picture using specific details, sights, sounds, and emotions.

  3. Provide them with third-party verification. Post your reviews and kind words recent clients have said about you. Sure, you can toot your own horn all day but man, there’s nothing quite like hearing it from a third party source. Show them the proof.

  4. Tell your ideal clients what to expect. Good photography is an investment. Make it crystal clear what the booking process looks like, what happens next, and what happens after that. A FAQ page is wonderful for this. After booking, it’s helpful to send a style or welcome guide, too. Don’t be afraid to over-communicate and never leave room for guessing or assumptions

  5. Be authentically you. People are going to look at your amazing artwork and be drawn in by that initially. But they’ll book you because of your personality. Don’t hide parts of yourself, that could be the very reason someone chooses you.
